Pictures in Motion represents a culmination of a lifetime of experience in the art in editing moving pictures. Written by Professor Emeritus Arnold Baker, Pictures in Motion was compiled from hundreds of handwritten notes and observations meticulously kept by Baker throughout his thirty plus years as a professional editor in Hollywood and as an editing professor at the University of Southern California s School of Cinematic Arts and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. A lover of film and film history, Baker starts Pictures in Motion with an engaging overview of motion pictures and editing itself a field once born out of the necessity of repairing film. From the role of the cutter as a fix-it person, he describes the development of sound, film stocks, television and the advent of digital. Next is the journey of production, even a chapter dealing with a lined script, with a focus on the role of the editor. In the remaining chapters, Baker draws from his treasury of experience and provides practical how-to insight on the art of editing itself.
